Piloting Reusable Packaging in Portland

At Kroger, offering our customers more sustainable choices is one of the objectives of our ESG strategy, Thriving Together. Our partnership with Loop, the reusable packaging platform, is an example of how we have brought this to life for our customers. Earlier this year, customers in our Fred Meyer stores in the Portland metro area were able to shop an assortment of products in Loop-ready packaging as part of our test pilot.

About Loop

Loop is a global shopping platform geared toward eliminating waste while also providing convenience for consumers. Loop allows customers to easily purchase popular everyday products in reusable, durable packaging, which they can return for cleaning and reuse once they’ve enjoyed the contents.

About the Pilot

For a 6-month period, our customers shopped from an assortment of more than 20 products from well-known brands, across multiple product categories. The pilot has now concluded and Kroger, Loop and our partners are summarizing our pilot learnings to inform future opportunities.

Packaging Returns

While we no longer carry Loop products in stores, customers are still able to return empty Loop packaging to our stores to ‘close the loop’ and receive their deposit. Until end of January 2023, customers who purchased Loop items can visit the Customer Service desk at one of our 25 Fred Meyer pilot stores to make their return. After that time, we will no longer offer a return option.
